Do you get your deposit back at an auction?
Unlike the usual property sales process, an auction is binding as soon as the winning bid is accepted. You’ll usually have to pay a deposit or reservation fee on the day of the auction. If you change your mind after a successful bid, the money put down is non-refundable. As a seller, you can cancel bids on eBay in the following situations: when you agree to a buyer’s request, when the item isn’t available anymore, if you made an error in the listing, or if you’re concerned the bidder might be fraudulent. If you need to cancel a bid entirely, we recommend contacting the auction house directly to request a cancellation. The decision to approve the request will be at the auctioneer’s discretion. It’s always best to contact them as soon as possible to explain your situation. If you don’t want to keep the auction or have no bids, you can still unpublish (if no bids exist) or cancel the auction instead. It is important to note that the terms are fixed and there is no cooling-off period when you buy at auction, so there is no option for a change of mind once the winning bid has been placed. For that reason, we strongly recommend obtaining legal advice prior to the auction where possible. This means that you can still withdraw your bid during the auction, but not once the hammer has fallen. If you place the highest bid and the hammer falls then you’re in a legally binding contract with the seller.
Can you back out of an auction after winning?
In the end, it is up to the Organization running the auction to decide whether to honor the request. If the winning bidder would like to back out after the close of the auction, you can offer the item to the next highest bidder or close the item as Not Sold. You may be charged a final value fee based on the amount of the highest bid, or you may sell the item to the highest bidder. If your listing isn’t eligible to be ended early, you can contact any bidders to explain the situation and ask them to retract their bids.
