Why is it called Fremantle?

The city was named after Captain Charles Howe Fremantle who arrived at the Swan River Colony on 2 May 1829, hoisted the British flag on the South Head, and took formal possession in the name of His Majesty King George IV, of ‘all that part of New Holland which is not included within the territory of New South Wales’. Fremantle is older than Perth. In 1829, a bunch of British hit land at the mouth of the Swan River. They were to settle the “Swan River Colony”. The primary purpose of this colony was to make sure the French did not claim the area.

What is Fremantle best known for?

Today, Fremantle is recognised for its well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes and convict-era architecture, and is known as a bohemian enclave with a thriving arts and culinary scene. Fremantle is a pretty expensive place to buy a house, generally, and East Fremantle wears that on its sleeve. It’s a lovely wander, with a lot of green spaces and a really good walk along the Swan River.
