Amg® cars of this era were known for their acceleration prowess and luxurious appointments. Bmw’s ///m motorsports division was and is amg®’s main competitor. In 2005 mercedes-benz® purchased the remaining shares of amg® and amg® then became a fully owned subsidiary of daimlerchrysler ag. Daimlerchrysler ag took a controlling interest in 1999, then became the sole owner of amg in 2005. Mercedes-amg gmbh is now a wholly owned subsidiary of mercedes-benz ag, which is in turn owned by the mercedes-benz group.
