After 30 months and 41 plastic surgeries, Erwin regained his eyesight, ears, and nose. He left the Air Force and spent the rest of his career working for the VA. He passed away at the age of 80 in 2002. Amazingly, though, Erwin survived his burns. He was flown back to the United States, and after 30 months and 41 surgeries, his eyesight was restored and he regained use of one arm.
