Can I import a 1969 Mustang in India?
Previously, only cars manufactured before 1950 could be brought into the country. However, the rules have now been relaxed to allow cars that are 50 years or older to be imported. This means that in 2025, vehicles built up to 1975 can be brought in, and in 2026, cars from 1976 will qualify. Importing a vehicle that is at least 25 years old. Such a vehicle would be entered under Box 1 on the HS-7 Declaration form to be given to Customs at the time of importation. Can I import a vintage car to India?
According to Notification No. February 7, 2025, cars classified as ‘vintage motor vehicles’ under Rule 81A can now be freely imported by actual users without the need for specific import licenses. This amendment simplifies the process for individuals wishing to import vintage cars for personal use. Commonly known as the 25-year rule, the Imported Vehicle Safety Compliance Act of 1988 (IVSCA) exempts non-conforming foreign motor vehicles that are 25 years old or older (classic or antique) from the restrictions imposed by this Act.
